The Framing Effect
Imagine a doctor telling a patient about an operation. In one case, the doctor says that ninety out of a hundred patients survive it; in another, that ten out of a hundred die. The two statements describe exactly the same facts, and a moment's arithmetic confirms that a ninety percent survival rate and a ten percent death rate are one and the same. Yet careful studies of both patients and experienced doctors show that people are far more willing to accept the operation when it is described in terms of survival, and noticeably more reluctant when the identical odds are expressed in terms of death. Researchers have found the very same pattern in a wide variety of settings, from choices about money and health to judgements about food and public policy, which suggests that it is a general feature of the human mind rather than a quirk of one particular situation. This tendency, in which the way a choice is worded changes the decision we make, is known as the framing effect, and it reveals that human beings do not judge information ( 19 ). …(続く)

Why We Yawn
Everyone yawns. Babies yawn before they are even born, and many animals, from dogs to birds, yawn too. Yet despite how common it is, scientists still cannot fully agree on why we do it. For a long time, the popular explanation was that yawning takes in extra oxygen when we are tired or bored and our breathing has slowed. This idea seems reasonable, but when researchers tested it by giving people more or less oxygen to breathe, it made no difference to how often they yawned.
