Confirmation Bias

When we hold a strong opinion, we like to think that we weigh the evidence fairly before deciding whether we are right. In reality, the human mind rarely works this way. From an early age, each of us builds up a picture of how the world works, and we grow attached to that picture because it makes life feel orderly and predictable. Giving up a settled belief can feel almost like losing a part of ourselves, and so we defend our opinions far more stubbornly than pure logic alone would suggest. Psychologists have shown that, once we believe something, we tend to notice and remember the evidence that supports it, while quietly ignoring anything that does not. We are quick to accept a fact that fits our view, yet we examine an inconvenient fact with unusual care, searching for any reason to dismiss it.
