The Bystander Effect
In 1964, the story of a young woman attacked outside her apartment in a large American city, reportedly while dozens of neighbours heard her cries yet did nothing to help, shocked the public and deeply puzzled psychologists. Newspapers at the time treated the episode as clear proof that modern urban life had made ordinary citizens cold, distant, and indifferent to one another. Why, people repeatedly asked, would so many separate witnesses fail to act at such a critical and obvious moment? Rather than simply concluding that city dwellers were unusually cruel or selfish, a small number of researchers took a more careful and scientific approach and began to look for a hidden psychological cause. They noticed one detail that others had overlooked: the witnesses had not been alone, but each had been merely one member of a larger, watching audience. Why the Ocean Is Salty
If you have ever swum in the sea and accidentally swallowed a mouthful of water, you know that the ocean is salty. What is far less obvious is where all that salt comes from. Surprisingly, most of it originates on land. As rain falls and flows over rocks and soil, it slowly dissolves tiny amounts of minerals, including the substances that make up ordinary salt. Rivers then carry these minerals down to the sea. A single river seems to contain very little salt, but over millions of years, countless rivers have delivered an enormous quantity of it to the oceans. …(続く)
